• Does it alert the phone or only sound locally?

  It does both, by different paths. The above-85 dB siren always sounds locally and standalone. For the phone push, the ZSS-HM-SSD01 must join a Tuya/Zigbee gateway and the Tuya / Smart Life app — then the alert reaches you anywhere, even when you have left home. Without a gateway it stays a good audible alarm but with no phone link.
• Do I need a hub, and which one?

  Yes. As a battery Zigbee sensor it does not connect to a phone directly and needs a Tuya/Zigbee gateway for the smart side: a Moes hub or any Tuya ZigBee gateway. Through it the device shows up in the Tuya / Smart Life app, pushes on alarm and joins scenes. Without a hub it works only as a local siren.
• What smoke does it detect — photoelectric or ionisation?

  The ZSS-HM-SSD01 is photoelectric: an optical labyrinth chamber where light is scattered by smoke particles. This type reacts faster to smouldering fires — from cables, sockets, mattresses, furniture — the most common at night. Ionisation sensors respond better to open flames but give more false alarms on cooking fumes.
• Which battery does it use and how long does it last?

  It uses a single 3 V CR123A / CR17335 lithium battery, non-rechargeable. Life runs from 5 to 10 years depending on the factory variant (HM2SA variants reach 10 years), with a low-battery warning. Because it is battery-powered it keeps working during a power cut — we suggest keeping a spare battery.
• Where do I mount it, and is it a hard job?

  No, it is plug-and-play with no electrician: it fixes to the ceiling with the bracket, anchors and screws in the box. Mount it in the centre of the room, at least 30 cm from walls and corners, and avoid the kitchen above a hob and the bathroom, where steam and fumes cause false alarms. For bedrooms and hallways it is the ideal spot.
• Does it also detect carbon monoxide or gas?

  No. The ZSS-HM-SSD01 is a smoke (fire) detector only; it does not react to carbon monoxide or to methane. For CO from a boiler or stove there is a separate electrochemical detector, and for natural-gas leaks a combustible-gas detector. In a home with gas appliances it is ideal to fit both a smoke detector and a CO one.
• Can I link several detectors to sound together?

  Not by wire or radio between themselves: the ZSS-HM-SSD01 has no physical interconnection between units like hard-wired alarms. The link is made in the Tuya / Smart Life app through the gateway — you can build a scene where one detector's alarm fires a smart siren or a notification for all. The local above-85 dB sound, though, stays per device.
