Start with the room
A person moves through a hallway but may sit still at a desk. This affects sensor choice and detection zones.
Consider time and daylight
Lights may be unnecessary by day. At night, a separate gentle light can help. Define the behaviour before choosing devices.
Keep a clear physical switch
Guests should not need to learn the automation. Agree on manual control, switch-off delays and when lights should stay on.
How should the routine be checked before handover?
Walk through by day and at night, then stand still. Check manual control and re-entry before the light turns off. In Home Assistant, the trigger, conditions and action are separate: presence can trigger a daylight check before switching on.
Official sources and scope
This is the platforms’ official documentation; we check the compatibility of a specific model separately.
From the principle to the exact model
A seated person and a hallway need different detection settings. We tune detection zones, switch-off delays and familiar switches.
