Yes, the N300 works with any 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi router, regardless of brand (from your provider or bought separately).

Does it increase internet speed?

It doesn't raise your plan's speed — it extends coverage. Where the signal was weak you'll get a more stable connection; top speed is limited by the 2.4 GHz band.

Where should I place it for best results?

Halfway between the router and the dead zone, in a socket where you still get 2-3 bars. If you put it in the dead room itself, there's nothing to amplify.

Is it single-band or dual-band?

Single-band — 2.4 GHz only. Enough for browsing, messaging, cameras and smart devices; for heavy 4K streaming on several screens we recommend a dual-band model.
