The device list matters more than the platform name
List existing appliances and planned purchases. Mark essential functions: room temperatures, local routines, voice or remote access.
Compare maintenance needs
Clarify who updates the system, makes backups and helps when integrations change. Consider capabilities and maintenance together.
Ask to see the routine you need
Review the interface using familiar family actions. A suitable system provides the needed functions and clear responsibility for configuration.
Local operation or cloud
Home Assistant is installed on your own server and can run routines locally; Zigbee and Z-Wave connect through a compatible adapter or coordinator, and Matter through the built-in integration. The SmartThings integration in Home Assistant works through the SmartThings cloud, so it depends on the internet. Decide which routines must work offline and check this against the official documentation.
Must you choose just one platform?
Not always: Home Assistant has a separate SmartThings integration. That does not guarantee every device or function. Ask to see the required actions on your equipment combination and agree who keeps backups and account access.
Official sources and scope
This is the platforms’ official documentation; we check the compatibility of a specific model separately.
From the principle to the exact model
Give the exact device model, controller and commands you need. A shared protocol logo does not confirm every function of the combination.
