KNX wins clearly here — cables embedded in concrete, 30V bus between every point, no radio-signal issues or interference. Cost amortizes over 20-30 years.
Existing apartment
Zigbee + Matter is the right pick. KNX needs wall chasing and new wiring. Retrofit cost > benefit. Exception: > 200 m² apartment already on the renovation list.
Commercial building
KNX makes sense with > 8 climate zones or complex lighting scenes. For retail / offices under 200 m² → Zigbee + professional relays win on cost and install time.

How KNX integrates with the rest of the ecosystem
A KNX/IP gateway exposes the entire bus to Home Assistant as climate, light, cover, switch entities. Complex scenes (KNX lighting + KNX climate + IMOU camera + Zigbee Aqara sensor) run in the same automation. Apple Home, Google Home and Yandex Alice connect through HA — not directly to KNX.

How much does a KNX point cost vs a Zigbee point?
KNX: ~2,500-4,000 MDL per point (actuator + button/sensor + cable + project + ETS). Zigbee: ~700-1,500 MDL per point (relay + sensor + config). The premium pays off from 30+ points in a house with a project.
Does KNX work without internet?
Yes, fully. The KNX bus is 100% local — actuators and buttons talk directly without a hub or internet. The internet only enables remote control through the HA gateway.
Can I add Zigbee sensors to a KNX system?
Yes, via Home Assistant. Aqara / Sonoff Zigbee sensors join HA, and HA sends commands to KNX through the gateway. You get the best of both: cheap Zigbee sensors + rock-solid KNX actions.
What KNX certification does the CasaSmart team have?
ETS Basic programmer in-house. For large projects (villas > 500 m²) we partner with a KNX Tutor for advanced certification. Every project receives a project file and ETS backup at completion.
Is KNX programmed only once?
The initial ETS programming covers the finalised scenarios. Later changes (adding a scenario, retuning a climate zone) need a short ETS session — 1-2 hours on-site or over VPN. The first two years are free on CasaSmart projects.
